50/1999]; and one in the British Museum, London The bronze objects are mirrors, and the glass comes under the heading of ‘unguentaria’, i.e. containers for perfumed oils. The ceramics consist of vessels in a range of forms, mainly jugs in a wide variety of shapes, ranging from 65mm to 200mm high. There are also a number of plates/dishes and bowls, and a pilgrim flask. The excavations at Shahr-i Qumis by the British Institute of Persian Studies in 1967 were co-sponsored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, this flask was not discovered until 1971, and it was acquired from the British Institute as a result of the Met’s financial contributions to the Institute’s excavations at Tepe Nush-i Jan, another site in Iran. This lead ampulla, or flask, is decorated on both sides with images of central events from the life of Christ, namely, the Crucifixion and the Ascension. The inscriptions surrounding these images reveal that the flask once contained "oil of the wood of life," namely, oil that had been brought into contact with the relic of the True Cross.
